Types of retirement living
Three broadly different paths. Which fits depends on how much care you need and how much independence you want to keep.
Home care
- Best for
- Staying in your own home with support
- Care provided
- Visiting help with personal care, nursing, cleaning and meals
- Typical costs
- Packages with a government subsidy plus income-tested fees
Great if your home is safe and manageable with help.
Retirement village
- Best for
- Independent living in a community
- Care provided
- Usually none — you arrange your own care as needed
- Typical costs
- Entry payment plus ongoing fees; may include a deferred fee on exit
Check the exit fee structure carefully before signing.
Residential aged care
- Best for
- 24/7 care and support
- Care provided
- On-site personal and clinical care around the clock
- Typical costs
- Basic daily fee plus accommodation (RAD/DAP) and means-tested fee
Requires an ACAT assessment. This is what Retirely covers.
